PPTA Industrial Action and Teacher Only Days Term 2 Dates

Please read the following message from Mr Neil Harry, Principal.

Kia ora whānau, parents and caregivers,

Many thanks to the welcome I have received since my start at Te Aroha College. I have really enjoyed my first week getting to know the students and staff and have been impressed with many aspects of the school. In due course I will write in more detail in an upcoming newsletter.

As you may be aware there is a great deal happening in the education sector currently, some of which is reported in the media. The PPTA and the Ministry of Education have yet to reach a settlement on the Secondary Teachers Collective Agreement. As a result, the PPTA have informed schools that further industrial action will take place during Term 2. On set days PPTA members will not teach a particular year level which means that particular year level will be rostered home. Students who are rostered home will be able to access online learning.

The proposed rostered home dates and year levels for the first 3 weeks are below:

Thursday 4 May (Week 2) Year 11 students

Tuesday 9 May (Week 3) Year 12 students

Thursday 11 May (Week 3) the whole school will be rostered home as all PPTA members will be on strike, therefore normal classes will not operate. Supervision will be provided by non PPTA members for those students requiring individual supervision.

In addition, on Friday 5 May the school will be closed for a teacher only day. This day is part of two days annually that the Ministry of Education has provided for curriculum and NCEA assessment changes. There is a requirement that one of these days is to be taken in the first two weeks of Term 2. This is an important day for our staff with significant changes happening over the next few years. We want to be in the best possible position to understand these changes and develop courses that best meet the needs for our students.

I understand that these disruptions significantly impact our students and their families. Hopefully quick progress can be made with the collective agreement.

Noho ora mai, take care,

Neil Harray

Principal
