Te Aroha College offers a confidential counselling and health care service.

To schedule an appointment with any of our health and wellbeing services students or whānau can contact the Counsellor or Nurse directly. Students can self-refer by approaching the counsellor or nurse. Counselling requests can be left in the lockbox situated in the Counselling Waiting Room. Students may also approach Student Services at the College Reception and request an appointment.

If a student has the need for a service outside of the ones mentioned below we will do everything we can to put this in place to support them.

Nurse

Our school nurse is RN Catherine Semmens. The nurse is onsite every Monday, Tuesday and Friday. Clinic hours are from 9am – 2.30pm. Email Catherine at, [email protected], or [email protected] 

Some of the nursing services include general medical advice, STI screening, stop-smoking referrals, drug and alcohol support and referrals, sore throat management, and mental health support.

Doctor

The school doctor is available some weeks. Doctor’s appointments are organised by the school nurse and may be either a face to face or virtual appointment.

Counselling is available from Monday to Friday between the hours of 8.55am – 3.05pm during term time.  Appointments outside of school hours by arrangement.  

Where appropriate, referrals will be made to outside agencies and mental health support services. The counselling service aims to support both students and, where appropriate, their whānau. Counselling at the College is strictly confidential, adhering to the code of Ethics of both, NZAC and NZCCA.

The counselling service aims to provide students with the appropriate therapeutic support, depending on their needs, in a safe environment, sensitive to cultural needs and values.  Various counselling tools and models are used which may include, therapeutic art, Narrative Therapy, Person-centred, Kaupapa Māori, Strengths-based, CBT, Mindfulness, and play and talk therapies.
